Reflection of a not so religious parent

I have not attended mass regularly for more than 20 years. Although I grew up as a strict catholic, having been raised by a catholic mother, I have always questioned the churches rituals. I stopped confessing to the priest before I stopped attending mass. I may not have attended mass regularly but I believe (maybe arrogantly) that God is with me. He has blessed me for so many years and I have honored His name in return by helping others, sharing my good fortunes with my family and even people I do not know, and living by the adage that the Lord is everywhere and He sees me all the time.

I have shunned Church organizations and rituals for over 20 years. I did not get married in the church; my children had not attended church services until we moved to the Philippines last year. We prefer to expose them to different religions such as the Muslim religion, Hinduism, and even traditional religions in Africa. We wanted them to have a more rounded exposure and become more tolerant of other religions as adults. Although I had my doubts about my children joining Kids for Christ, I agreed for them to join to develop self-confidence, know what being a catholic is, and be with their friends.

I AM VERY GLAD THAT THEY JOINED KFC because we discovered a community. A community of wonderful people who show respect and understanding of their fellow human being. Not only did my children find friends, and hopefully a connection to God, so did I.

I may still not attend mass, or go for a confession and even communion, but I DO FEEL THAT I AM CLOSER TO GOD DURING THOSE DAYS that we prepared and had the International Kids Village at Santa Isabel International School. I hope it stays with my children and me.
